Phoenix Review

by James Manheim

Pianist Stewart Goodyear has an unusual knack for combining traditional and contemporary repertory in ways that shed light on both, and he does it again with Phoenix. The album graphics forgo any statements about the content in favor of images of matches burned down to various degrees, but elsewhere, Goodyear states: "As a phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor, the works on this album obtain new life by arising from the soundworld, past traditions, and gestures of Franz Liszt."
