From the first piece the Poiesis Quartet played together (Perkinson’s Calvary) to their first ever commissioned work (Lau’s Surfacing), Surfacing is an exploration of the Quartet's musical chronology and artistic ethos. Throughout the Poiesis' formative years together, the imaginative compositions of Brian Raphael Nabors, Kevin Lau, Sky Macklay, and Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson guided them in both musical and spiritual growth. Drawing from their namesake 'poiesis’ -- a Greek word meaning creation -- this album expands the string quartet soundworld through unique harmonic textures and playful rhythms, whilst contending with themes ranging from grief and political resistance to fantasy and humor.
